Teeth Whitening is a very simple and effective way to brighten your smile while retaining the integrity and quality of your natural teeth.

Enlighten Evolution 3 Whitening

We will custom make tooth whitening trays for you, with which you will whiten your teeth over two weeks at home using Enlighten home whitening treatment.

You will then have a two-hour appointment with us to have chairside tooth whitening carried out. There will be two applications of a special chairside whitening gel during this visit to make your teeth beautifully white.

You can experience a small amount of tooth sensitivity with this treatment, which is entirely reversible within a few days to a week.

Home whitening kits

We will custom make a set of trays to fit your teeth and carry out a chairside demonstration of how to whiten your teeth at home with our special whitening gel. We may also prescribe Enlighten Tooth Serum or Tooth Mousse to help with tooth sensitivity while you whiten your teeth at home.

Minimising tooth sensitivity during tooth whitening

Temporary tooth sensitivity is a side effect of tooth whitening. Tooth sensitivity can become evident within 24 hours of tooth whitening. This can be minimised by using a sensitivity treatment before and after tooth whitening.

Dr Little advises that you taken a day or two break from whitening if your teeth become sensitive. You can resume once you feel able to.

At Indigo Little in Balham, if we feel that you may be susceptible to sensitivity following Tooth Whitening, we will put you on a programme to minimise sensitivity prior to commencing with your whitening treatment.

Dr Little will examine your teeth and provide you with a Bespoke Tooth Whitening Programme and recommendations to minimise sensitivity.

You can also use either Tooth Mousse or Enlighten Tooth Serum overnight in your teeth whitening trays to help minimise sensitivity. This can be done alongside tooth whitening.

Why do teeth need whitening?

Teeth can darken due to smoking, staining from foods and drinks such as tea, coffee and red wine, as well as ageing.

With ageing, the white enamel that covers the dentine becomes thinner and more transparent, and the dentine beneath this becomes more yellow, resulting in overall yellowing of teeth.

Tooth whitening products lighten the colour of your teeth. They usually contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. When these chemicals break down, oxygen enters the hard outer surface (enamel) of your teeth, which whitens them.

How to keep teeth white

How long the whitening effect lasts will depend on how colourful your diet is as well as the mineral content and structure of your enamel.

Therefore, some patients may need to “top up” their whitening treatment every six months, while others may not need to do so for up to three years.

“Topping up” tooth whitening is a simple procedure usually involving tooth whitening for a couple of hours at home for 1-2 nights using a “Home Whitening kit” that has been specially made for you by your dentist.
