Oral Health and the Impact of Menopause

teeth, health, smile, dentist, dentalhealth, oralhealthvDecreasing estrogen levels during menopause can have an impact on dental health. Menopause sees hormonal changes which end the menstrual cycle and can have an effect on the whole body.

Key takeaways:

– Try to stay hydrated to avoid a dry mouth due to lower estrogen levels, which can increase risk of cavities.

– Women become more at risk from osteoporosis which can affect the alveolar bone supporting the teeth, increasing risk of loose teeth.

– Menopause can make gum disease worse, leading to teeth sensitivity, infections and loose teeth.

Menopause brings many changes due to hormonal shifts in the body that end menstruation, some of which may affect the oral cavity. However, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy as you transition into menopause by visiting your dentist to take the best possible care of your smile!
