There are various reasons why gums recede, or pull back exposing more of the tooth and its roots.
Main points:
– Aggressive brushing or teeth grinding can damage the gums.
– Smoking and using tobacco products irritates gum tissue.
– Gum disease is the most common reason for receding gums yet is preventable.
If you notice sore, red, bleeding gums see your dentist straight away. This is an early sign of gum disease. It can be reversed if caught early.
“Without brushing and flossing, this plaque has a greater chance of going on to cause gum disease.”
